Q and A’s

question-and-answerWe have created a little section in here to allow our runners to ask and leave replies to any questions they may have regarding all areas of their training towards the London Marathon.

If you have a question please post a comment below and we will separate them out into blog posts which feature individually on there own little blog here as well as this we will be regularly updating this page with direct links to questions that we have answered.

Does anyway else have two pairs of trainers to run in?
I’ve read that it’s good to have two pairs in rotation so that the shock absorbancy has a chance to decompress in between runs. This may be nonsense and an excuse to buy another pair of new trainers.
    Any views anyone?

    Hi Heidi,
this is my first Mararthon too, and it is quite quite a daunting experience, how’s your training going, are you following a schedule?
Because I generally do all of my runs during the day, I tend to go it alone and the hardest thing I find is keeping motivated on long runs. I find on a long run my mind plays tricks with me and keeps finding excuses to turn back or stay close to home.

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone have refuelling advice? I have so far not had alot of success with the refuelling strategies on Long Runs. I’m not sure if I should try a variation of gels, drinks etc until I find the right one, or stick to one until I’m used to it?
Another worry I have (nightmares about) is getting to the Marathon on Race Day. Is it advisable not to drive, is it possible for us to organise a mini bus? Yes I’m panicking!

Hi Annette,It is really nice to talk to someone i run alone 3 times a week ,sat i managed to do 13miles but my times are not good ,that took 2hours27 mins.
I find because i run on my own im running at a too steady pace im probably not pushing hard enough.
I havent got a training plan,I just try to run more (10%)+everyweek.
Im doing 30 miles approx a week but dont know if thats right or wrong.
I would just like to know if im on track or going seriously wrong.
The thought at the moment of running 26 miles in under 4 hours is terrifying(no chance).
My best buy from runners edge was garmin watch.

Heidi, stop stressing about your times.30 miles a week is good base running and if you attempt to run all your runs looking at the clock you will burn out.Your long runs should be at least a minute and a half slowere than your marathon times. You can run one sunday run a little quicker to develop speed endurance. You need to get some structure by downloading a realistic training plan from say runners world…you cant just wing it.The 10 per cent rule is very sensible.Just remain positive your doing really well, just focus on getting round and getting that medal

    Hi Heidi,
It sounds like you are doing really well, I did my first 13miler this week, so seems you are on track.
Runners World Website has a Smart Coach page, you can put in your details and it provides you with a training programme. I’m using the second training schedule in the Virgin Marathon Magazine, I was given this when I signed up, maybe you have it at home somewhere?
If you are local to Southend and would like to meet up for a run sometime let me know.
I also found the Team Training Run really good for lifting my motivation and not feeling as if I’m the only one putting myself through this!
    Happy running, keep it up.

Hi everyone, are there any Havens Runners living in Southend?
If possible I’d like a lift to the Team Run on Sunday?
    Thanks
