Training Day 22

See all posts by

Well the thaw is on, so I managed to get out on the streets today, did a 40min run 10ER 2×10min TR 10ER,
I find the Threshold Runs really hard, but I suppose thats the point, but I do struggle to run flat out for 10mins. Any advice that anyone has on Threshold Runs would be really welcome.
It was cold and damp, but managed 4.42miles.

IOM Winter

Hi All,

It’s been a while since I posted anything but generally training has been going well. I was particularly pleased with clocking up 40 miles in the week after Christmas.

However, since then I have had the same challenges as everyone else & been severely hampered by the weather. That said, I did manage a couple of runs in the snow in the Isle of Man last week (see attached). It certainly is harder work running on unstable ground!

I have now bitten the bullet & rejoined the gym in order to cram in some treadmill training. I find it very difficult to fit visits to the gym in but now I am paying out again I will just have to force myself! I visited Rayleigh Leisure Centre last night & was somewhat pleasantly surprised to be dragged into a treadmill class for half an hour that ended up with my pulse rate right up at my maximum! It was hard but actually good fund & a pleasant diversion from miles & miles of road running.

By the way Ian, sorry I haven’t emailed to arrange weekend runs but my phone crashed & I lost most of my contacts. Place a comment on this blog if you see it & we can sort something out. Otherwise, I hope to see you on Sunday.

Keep going everyone.

A really frozen run in the woods (Training Day 21)

See all posts by

Like everyone I’ve been feeling so frustrated about not being able to run on the pavements. So today I went back to the woods.
I figured that at least if I do my weekly long run surely this is better than nothing. So I set out to do the scheduled 2hr run.
My first lap felt like total madness, the terrain was very mixed, hard packed snow, slush, and mushy leaves with the occassional muddy and very icy puddle. I felt like giving up, but no, I carried on, lap 2 felt better, as there were alot more people walking in the woods with their dogs, giving me encouraging/sympathetic looks. But then I just kept going round and round, saw a couple of runners, and I kept going, even though my legs were cold and tired, and my feet were wet and rubbing on my shoes. I had a couple of Sport Jelly Beans stashed in my glove, I ate these and gave it one more lap, I managed to keep going for 1hr 53mins, 10.5miles.
I have to say that I was glad when it was over, but now I’m looking forward to a nice hot lunch.

Important – Pasta Supper Cancellation

See all posts by

Hi Guys

Hope you’re enjoying the weather and still able to train, we’ve had a long hard look at the weather and think that in the interests of everyone’s safety the sensible thing to do is cancel the pasta supper. I think that I will struggle to get the shopping as the shelves seem to be bare!

I will not set a date now as I’m not sure how long we will be having the snow but I think it will probably be the 22nd Jan, if you bear that in mind. Very sorry for the inconvenience, but although an adventure a night spent at the Heath Centre snowed in  may not be the best preparation for a wedding on Saturday!

Please remember you can  still set up your  blog on this site .The comment facility has now been activated to communicate with other runners and people can also link direct to their on-line sponsorship site.

Please do care when training and I’ll be in touch soon

A frozen run in the woods

See all posts by

Hello everyone, its nice to see some other bloggers on the site.
This is my first Marathon and I’m a bit worried about the disruption that the snow is causing to my training plan.
I was desperate to do my Long Run this week, so on Tuesday despite the icy conditions I thought I’d have a go at running in the woods.
It was a very pleasant experience, I wrapped up well, but after one lap had to discard a layer, I think I over did it. Then I carried on my my run, the woods were beautiful, the ground was white and frozen, and this did make it difficult underfoot, but didn’t seem as dangerous as running on the pavements.
I saw some other runners too, and managed my long run of 10miles. I would certainly recommend it.
However, since then more snow!
Does anyone do treadmill training? I’m not sure whether to join a gym or sit it out.

IBT

Hi everyone, this is my first time blogging so here goes ……

I am training for my first marathon and all was going well, I completed my first half marathon in September ‘Run to the Beat’ and carried on with my usual three 4 mile runs and then an 8 or 10 miler at the weekend and hoped to start upping the mileage a bit in the next 2 weeks but out of the blue I have been struck down with IBT.  Urghhhh it is so annoying and frustrating. I am took full advantage of my private health care through work and have been seeing a physio and also a physician Dr Daniel Baron.  After an MRI scan and x ray IBT was confirmed and Dr Baron decided that I need to have a steroid jab in my knee,  so Monday is the day.

Has anyone else suffered IBT?????  I just want to run so much it’s driving me nuts.

Running in the snow!

Afternoon to everyone here. Thought I’d drop a line to see how everyone is getting on trying to train in the snow!

I went out along the seafront Monday and yesterday – it honestly wasn’t too bad! Very cold, but that’s half the fun, wrapping up and heading out.

Met another Havens Hospices runner last night wearing her bright yellow vest – a good tip for being seen in the dark, and also promoting our wonderful charity!

Take care everyone,

Training day 19

Today I could only fit in a short run, so did 40mins Hill running, managed 4miles this time which is a real improvement.
However, unfortunetly there is snow on the ground again, was due to do long run today, but it just looks too icy. May give the woods a go and see if its a bit safer.

Happy New Year!!

Training runs 17 and 18, Tuesday was a 40 min Steady Run, watch now working, I actually knew how long my run was.
Run 18, New Years Eve, an hour long run along the empty seafront, it was bitterly cold, there was sleet driving against me on the way out. Half an hour into my run I had to ask myself what was making me carry on? My thigh muscles were so cold as I was soaked from the sleet, the freezing wind was actually hurting my legs and hands. I have never come closer to giving up my run, turning around and just going home. But then in the distance coming towards me was another runner, also battling against the weather, as we passed eachother we looked at eachother, both a total mess, and laughed!
I managed to finish the hour, 6.3miles, I was so glad to get home.
